Will There be a Four Peat?
For athletes, what do they do after they’ve performed the "Three Time’s a Charm" trick? Returning and defending Champions of the Blue Moon Kailua Night Doubles tennis tournament Minh Le and Wei Yu Su have formed a chemistry that seems unstoppable. Le, who hung up his rackets last year from playing professional tournaments, works for an IT company in Japan. Su, the other half of the dynamic duo, does IT for Punahou School and teaches a handful of the state’s top junior tennis talent. Many have wondered after last year’s straight set victory over runner ups Mikael Maata and Jan Tribler if Le and Su can pull off "Four Time’s a Charm?"
Wei Yu Su was formerly the No. 1 ranked junior in Taiwan before he came to play for BYU Hawaii. While at BYU, he played No. 1 on the team that won the Division II Davis Cup title over Iran in 1994. He was also ranked No. 1 in the Hawaii Pacific Tennis Association for Men’s Open Singles in 1998 and 1999. Minh Le, one of the top players at UC Berkeley in 1998, went on to play on the ATP pro tour and has played doubles with partners like Feliciano Lopez from Spain, currently ranked top 30 in the world. In 1999 at an ITF Futures tournament in India, Minh also has a notable win against Ivo Karlovic from Croatia, who is currently ranked 28 in the world.
Sanjay Mirchandani, Owner and Principal for Talent HR Solutions (THRS), a local Hawaii company that outsources HR Administration and Career Placement and payroll services in Hawaii, is one of the proud sponsors for the tournament this year. Sanjay says, "We are avid tennis players in our spare time so when we discussed sponsorship for the tournament with Judy Weitz from the Kailua Racquet Club, we jumped at the opportunity to support these high level tennis players." Talent HR Solutions also sponsors a men’s team in the Honolulu Tennis League (HTL) for the summer 2009 leagues. The THRS Tennis Team had a good run in their division this summer. "We are big advocates and supporters in the tennis scene here on Oahu," says Mirchandani.
Bruce Nagel, Kailua Racquet Club manager and director of the club is looking forward to see if Minh and Wei Yu can do a "Four – Peat." They both possess big lefty serves, great shot making, and crafty volleys during clutch points. They’re able to balance power ground strokes and fluid touch volleys. Their ability to mix up the pace of the ball and communicate while poaching at the net often gives most of their opponents trouble. Tennis enthusiasts, come out to see if any teams can break Le and Su’s chemistry this year. The 2009 Blue Moon Men's Night Doubles tournament is scheduled to start qualifying rounds on Monday, July 27, 2009 and the main draw starts Monday, August 3, 2009.
